Un petit pas pour le chanvre, un grand pas pour votre santé -orijin.bio-equipenutrition

A small step for hemp, a big step for your health!

Cultivated for thousands of years, hemp is more and more present in our plates. This plant is sometimes confused with cannabis because it is the same botanical species, but hemp contains very little THC, which does not make it a psychotropic drug. In addition to its versatility in the kitchen, its fiber is now used as a textile and insulator in ecological housing.

In Canada, the hemp market is growing rapidly due to the population’s craze for plant-based protein. It can be found in the form of seeds, oil, flour and spreads. It can even be brewed into beer!

Nourishing seeds

In only 20 g (about 30 ml or 2 tablespoons) of shelled hemp seeds, you will find almost 7 g of protein, 1 g of fiber and 2 mg of iron. They are therefore an interesting addition to daily snacks and meals to make them more nutritious. They can be added to oatmeal, smoothies and salads. Although it contains 20 amino acids, hemp seed is not considered a complete protein source due to its low lysine and leucine content. It is, however, rich in arginine and L-tyrosine, an amino acid involved in stress reduction.

Essential and sustainable fats

Hemp oil provides an interesting ratio between omega 3 and omega 6 (1:3) with 16% omega 3 and 60% omega 6. These essential fatty acids are precious allies in the prevention of chronic diseases. This nutty-flavored oil also contains a considerable amount of vitamin E, which has antioxidant properties that help fight damage to our cells.

It does not contain EPA and DHA type omega 3s, as these are mainly found in fish. However, the environmental impact of fishing and producing fish oil is much higher than that of hemp oil. Combining hemp with a seaweed supplement provides sufficient EPA and DHA while being part of a much more sustainable farming model.

In short, hemp seed is an excellent ally to meet our daily protein requirement in a simple and sustainable way. To discover more healthy, nutritious and ecological foods, don’t hesitate to contact a Dietitian-Nutritionist!
